KIBALE FOREST NATIONAL PARK

Turaco Treetops

A ridge above the Kibale forest zone gives this lodge views across tea estates, crater country, and remnant woodland near the park boundary. This western Uganda setting lies within the Albertine Rift system, where evergreen forest and agricultural buffer areas support resident chimpanzees, monkeys, and birdlife.

Built on a forested slope outside the main park gate, the lodge combines raised cottages, standard rooms, and a central block arranged around the ridge line. Timber finishes and wide windows keep the focus on the surrounding tea country and woodland. The main house contains the restaurant, bar, and lounge, while a swimming pool and terrace sit below the guest areas. Operationally, it works well for chimpanzee tracking because Kanyanchu is reached by a short drive. After morning activity, guests can return for lunch and use afternoons for Bigodi Wetland visits or time at the viewpoint.

Inside the Lodge

Location

Near the Kanyanchu sector of Kibale National Park, the lodge occupies a ridge above tea estates and forest edge habitat. Road transfers take about 20 minutes from Kanyanchu, 2.5 hours from Kasese Airstrip, and 5 hours from Entebbe or Kampala by road.

Rooms

Accommodation includes 16 guest units divided between 8 standard rooms and 8 raised cottages. All units have en suite bathrooms, hot water, and mosquito netting. The cottage category adds private outdoor sitting space, while room layouts place guests close to the main lodge facilities.

Amenities

Facilities include a restaurant, bar, lounge, and swimming pool arranged around the ridge top setting. Staff coordinate chimpanzee tracking departures, Bigodi Wetland visits, and local transport. Meals are served on site, and the terrace gives guests a practical space for evening briefings and quiet downtime.

Unique Experience

The ridge setting gives a useful transition between cultivated tea country and Kibale forest, which helps guests read the region before trekking. Short transfers to Kanyanchu also leave time for Bigodi Wetland or crater basin visits on the same day.

Nearby Experiences

Chimpanzee Tracking

Guided tracking follows chimpanzees as they move through the forest in search of food and social groups. You walk beneath dense cover, listening for calls and watching for movement above as guides interpret signs along the trail. Encounters vary in length and distance, with each sighting shaped by the troop’s activity

Primate Walks

Primate walks focus on locating several monkey species that inhabit different levels of the forest. You move at a steady pace along established paths, scanning the canopy and mid-level branches for movement. Sightings often include multiple species within a single outing.

Bigodi Wetland Walk

A guided walk through Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary reveals a mix of wetland and forest-edge species. You follow raised paths and narrow trails, observing birds, primates, and plant life adapted to these conditions.

Birdwatching

Birdwatching in Kibale focuses on forest species that are often identified by sound before sight. You move through shaded trails, pausing to locate calls and subtle movement within the trees. The experience rewards patience, with species appearing briefly in openings or shifting between branches.

Forest Walks

Forest walks explore sections of the park beyond primate tracking routes, offering time to observe plant life, insects, and smaller wildlife. You follow guided paths through varying forest types, noting changes in vegetation and light. The experience provides a closer look at the structure and rhythm of the forest itself.
