MURCHISON FALLS NATIONAL PARK

Pakuba Safari Lodge

Situated on the eastern bank of the Albert Nile within northern Murchison Falls National Park, the lodge occupies an area of open savanna and riverine woodland. This geographical position provides immediate access to the Buligi game tracks, where high concentrations of elephant, buffalo, and giraffe utilize the grassland.

The rebuilt lodge occupies the site of a former state retreat and uses a broad, low rise form suited to the heat of the Albertine Rift floor. Its layout follows a hotel style plan rather than a tented camp model, allowing circulation through sheltered verandas and central internal spaces. That scale gives it a clear role within the northern Murchison circuit, where overland groups, fly in guests, and extended park itineraries often converge. Being based in the Buligi sector also places daily wildlife activities within a short operational radius throughout a multi night park stay.

Inside the Lodge

Location

The lodge is located in the northern Buligi sector of Murchison Falls National Park, overlooking the Albert Nile. Pakuba Airstrip is a 20 minute drive away. Road access from Kampala via the Paraa Bridge takes 6 hours, while Gulu is reached in 2 hours.

Rooms

The inventory consists of 46 rooms including 32 standard units and 2 interconnecting family suites. Each room features an en suite bathroom, mosquito netting, and a private veranda. The North Wing contains an additional 12 units designed with modern finishes and views of the Nile.

Amenities

Facilities include a restaurant, bar, and a swimming pool overlooking the savanna. A shared lounge area is available for guest briefings. Staff coordinate game drives within the Buligi area and provide daily laundry services. Meals are served on site, focusing on continental and locally inspired dishes.

Unique Experience

The location within the northern sector allows for wildlife observation directly from the lodge grounds, as leopard and hyena often frequent the area around the ruins. This proximity to the game tracks ensures that guests are already within the prime viewing zone.

Nearby Experiences

Game Drives

Game drives across the northern bank offer some of East Africa’s most reliable big-game viewing. Guided by expert rangers, you traverse the open savanna in search of elephants, lions, leopards, and giraffes. Morning and evening drives reveal the park at its most active, with predators on the hunt and herds moving across the golden grass.

Boat Safaris

A boat journey along the Victoria Nile leads to the base of the thundering falls. Hippos and crocodiles line the riverbanks while fish eagles circle overhead. The cruise ends where the Nile explodes through rock, spray rising into the air, a perspective on the falls that only the river can provide.

Hike To The Top of the Falls

A short hike leads to the top of Murchison Falls, where the full width of the Nile squeezes through a narrow cleft before plunging forty meters below. Standing at the rim, you can feel the ground tremble and the mist settle on your skin, a moment of raw natural power few places on earth can match.

Birdwatching

Murchison is home to more than 450 recorded bird species, making it one of Uganda’s premier birding destinations. Expect to see shoebills, Abyssinian ground hornbills, and a wealth of waterbirds drawn to the Nile’s abundance.

Chimpanzee Tracking

The nearby Budongo Forest Reserve offers the chance to track wild chimpanzees through one of East Africa’s largest mahogany forests. Guided by experienced trackers, you follow calls and movement through the canopy until they encounter a habituated community feeding, grooming, and navigating their forest home.
