QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK

Mweya Safari Lodge

Occupying the Mweya Peninsula inside Queen Elizabeth National Park, the lodge overlooks the Kazinga Channel with Lake Edward extending to the south. This narrow landform creates direct access to open water, papyrus fringes, and a productive wildlife zone used regularly by hippos, elephants, and waterbirds.

Long established within the park, the lodge functions as a full service base for game drives and channel cruises. The main building faces the water and contains the principal lounge, bar, and dining spaces, all arranged to make the peninsula outlook part of daily use. Guest accommodation spreads across the grounds in room and suite categories suited to different stay types. Interiors follow a safari hotel format, with fitted furniture, private bathrooms, and balconies or terraces. After activities, guests return to the pool deck or viewpoint, where light settles over the channel and escarpments each evening.

Inside the Lodge

Location

On the Mweya Peninsula in central Queen Elizabeth National Park, the lodge overlooks the Kazinga Channel near the jetty. Kasese Airstrip is about 2 hours away by road, while Entebbe takes 6 to 7 hours, and Ishasha takes about 3 hours by road.

Rooms

Accommodation includes standard rooms, deluxe rooms, and suites arranged across the peninsula grounds. Guest units feature ensuite bathrooms, seating areas, and private outdoor balconies or terraces. Several rooms face the Kazinga Channel, while others look toward Lake Edward or the central green gardens below.

Amenities

Facilities include a restaurant, bar, lounge, and swimming pool within the main complex. Staff arrange game drives, Kazinga Channel boat trips, and park excursions. Guests also use outdoor terraces that overlook the water and serve as evening viewing points after activities each day in camp.

Unique Experience

The peninsula setting links land and water based wildlife viewing in one operational circuit. Guests can leave for a morning game drive, return for a Kazinga Channel launch nearby, then spend dusk watching warthogs and waterbirds move across the lawns.

Nearby Experiences

Game Drives

Game drives across the park’s savanna tracks offer consistent sightings of large mammals moving between feeding and resting areas. Guided by experienced rangers, you follow elephants, buffalo, and antelope while scanning for predators along the edges of cover.

Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise

A boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel brings you close to one of the park’s most concentrated wildlife areas. From the water, you observe hippos in large groups, elephants approaching to drink, and birdlife gathered along the banks. The slow pace allows for clear viewing.

Tree Climbing Lions

In the southern sector of Ishasha, you search for lions known for resting in the branches of fig trees during the heat of the day. You move through open ground and scattered woodland, watching carefully for movement above as well as at ground level. Sightings depend on timing and patience.

Chimpanzee Tracking

Within Kyambura Gorge, guided walks lead you into a steep-sided forest where chimpanzees move through the canopy. You follow trails beneath dense cover, listening for calls and watching for movement above. The experience offers a quieter contrast to the open areas of the park, shaped by sound, shade, and close observation.

Crater Lakes Exploration

Around the park’s northern sectors, you move through clusters of crater lakes formed by ancient volcanic activity. From raised viewpoints, you observe water bodies set within enclosed basins, each with its own vegetation and birdlife. Short walks and drives between these lakes reveal how varied the landscape becomes within a small area.
