VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

One & Only Gorilla’s Nest

A eucalyptus grove covers much of this foothill lodge near Volcanoes National Park, giving the site a distinctly wooded character that separates it from nearby open farmland. The Virunga volcanoes rise to the north, while bamboo and afromontane forest begin further up the slopes where gorilla trekking routes operate.

The lodge uses the eucalyptus stand well, with guest lodges set apart along winding paths rather than grouped around an open lawn. Interiors lean contemporary, though local craft references remain visible in woven panels, basketry, and textured fabrics used throughout the rooms. Large windows keep the trees close, and covered decks allow guests to sit outside even when the weather turns. After an early departure to the park, the base offers enough privacy in the rooms and a central lodge that brings people together for meals and the next day's briefings.

Inside the Lodge

Location

The lodge sits within easy reach of the Volcanoes National Park headquarters and trekking briefing point. This foothill position keeps gorilla trekking logistics efficient, and the drive from Kigali usually takes about two and a half hours

Rooms

Accommodation consists of 21 free standing lodges and suites, including Forest King, Forest Twin, Virunga, Ingagi, and Silverback categories. All feature private decks, fireplaces, and en suite bathrooms, while the Silverback Suite adds two bedrooms, extra indoor living space, and a private pool.

Amenities

The main guest area includes The Nest restaurant and bar, indoor lounge spaces, and an outdoor firepit. A spa, heated pool, fitness centre, and yoga area serve the wellness side of the lodge, while staff coordinate trekking schedules and transport to and from the park.

Unique Experience

The eucalyptus grove gives the grounds a distinctly wooded character, with filtered light, cooler shade, and enclosed views around the guest units. That setting lends itself to short walks, photography, and bird observation within the lodge before or after trekking.

Nearby Experiences

Gorilla Trekking

Multiple habituated groups occupy different sectors of the park, with permits issued daily for each family. Rangers locate the gorillas before trekkers depart, and the hike takes you through bamboo and montane forest to reach them. One hour with a gorilla family allows observation of feeding, infant care, and silverback behaviour at close proximity.

Golden Monkey Tracking

Habituated troops occupy the bamboo zone, moving fast through dense vegetation where visibility drops and positions shift quickly. Following them means pushing through stands where the monkeys feed on young shoots and leap between stems. The experience runs shorter than gorilla trekking but brings you closer to a species restricted to the Virunga-Bwindi region

Bisoke Crater Hike

The trail to Bisoke’s summit climbs through vegetation zones that change with altitude, ending at a crater lake enclosed by the rim. Steep sections pass through mud and dense growth, demanding full-day commitment and reasonable fitness. From the top, the crater opens below while neighboring peaks line the horizon in clear conditions.

Karisoke Research Station

A half-day trek brings you to the site where Dian Fossey lived and worked until her death. The station sits in a saddle between Bisoke and Karisimbi, accessible through gorilla habitat. Fossey’s grave lies beside those of gorillas she studied, maintained as part of the conservation history of this park.

Dian Fossey Grave Hike

The trek to Fossey’s burial site passes through forest where gorilla groups range, combining historical interest with wildlife possibility. Guides explain her research methods and the threats that gorillas faced during her years at Karisoke. The grave sits within a small cemetery where several gorillas, including the silverback Digit, are also buried.
