ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali

Arrive in Kigali, where your private guide welcomes you and transfers you to your hotel. The day is intentionally gentle, allowing time to rest after your flight or explore the city’s galleries, cafés, and cultural spaces. Settle into Rwanda’s calm rhythm before beginning the journey across its most remarkable landscapes.

Day 2: Kigali Cultural Introduction

Spend the day exploring Kigali with your guide, shaped around your interests. Visit meaningful cultural sites, contemporary art spaces, local markets, or the Kigali Genocide Memorial for important historical context. This day adds depth to the journey, revealing Rwanda’s resilience, creativity, and modern identity before entering the wilderness.

Day 3: Kigali to Akagera National Park

After breakfast, travel east to Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s restored savannah wilderness. The scenery shifts into rolling plains, lakes, wetlands, and woodland. Arrive at your lodge for lunch or afternoon relaxation, followed by an optional introductory game drive as the light softens across the park’s wildlife-rich landscapes.

Day 4: Akagera Game Drive and Boat Safari

Explore Akagera with a full day of safari activities. Morning game drives search for lions, rhinos, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, antelope, and rich birdlife. In the afternoon, enjoy a boat safari on Lake Ihema, where hippos, crocodiles, waterbirds, and open lake views bring a softer rhythm.

Day 5: Akagera to Nyungwe Forest

Leave Akagera after breakfast and begin the scenic journey toward Nyungwe Forest. This is a longer travel day, moving through Rwanda’s changing landscapes with optional stops for lunch, photography, or cultural interest. Arrive near the rainforest, settle into your lodge, and rest before the following day’s forest experiences.

Day 6: Chimpanzee Tracking and Canopy Walk

Begin early with chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe Forest, following distant calls through the rainforest with expert guides. The experience is active, atmospheric, and deeply rewarding. Later, enjoy the canopy walkway, suspended above the forest floor with sweeping views across treetops, mist, birdsong, and ancient green.

Day 7: Forest Walk, Birding, or Tea Estate Experience

Spend a slower day around Nyungwe, shaped by your interests. Choose a guided forest walk, birding experience, colobus monkey tracking, tea estate visit, or relaxed lodge time surrounded by rainforest. This day softens the pace and allows the southern highlands to feel less like a stop and more like a stay.

Day 8: Nyungwe Forest to Lake Kivu

After breakfast, travel toward Lake Kivu, where the journey shifts into a quieter lakeside rhythm. Arrive beside calm waters framed by green hills and local communities. The afternoon is open for rest, scenic views, kayaking, a boat ride, or a gentle walk along the shore.

Day 9: Congo Nile Trail Cycling on Lake Kivu

Spend the day exploring a scenic section of the Congo Nile Trail by bicycle, guided at a comfortable pace along Lake Kivu’s western corridor. Ride past green hills, lakeside villages, coffee landscapes, and quiet rural roads, with time to pause for views, local encounters, photography, and a relaxed lakeside finish.

Day 10: Lake Kivu to Volcanoes National Park

Enjoy a final lakeside morning before travelling north toward Volcanoes National Park. The scenery rises into cooler highlands and the dramatic foothills of the Virunga Mountains. Arrive at your lodge near the park, settle into the mountain atmosphere, and prepare for the next morning’s gorilla trekking experience.

Day 11: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

After an early breakfast, attend the park briefing before entering Volcanoes National Park with expert rangers and trackers. The trek follows bamboo forest and volcanic slopes until your assigned gorilla family is located. Spend one extraordinary hour observing their gestures, social bonds, and quiet presence before returning to the lodge.

Day 12: Golden Monkey Tracking and Return to Kigali

Begin the morning with golden monkey tracking or choose a relaxed lodge breakfast before departure. Golden monkeys bring a lively, colourful final encounter in the bamboo forest. Afterward, return to Kigali by private transfer, with time for lunch, a city stop, or direct airport drop-off depending on your flight schedule.
