VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

Singita Kwitonda

Singita Kwitonda Lodge lies in Kinigi, on the edge of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda’s northern highlands. The property sits beneath the Virunga volcanoes, with cultivated foothills rising towards the afromontane forest and bamboo habitat. Morning mist and cool temperatures shape the rhythm of this high altitude setting.

Named after the silverback Kwitonda, the lodge is shaped around the volcanic setting of Kinigi and the practical rhythm of gorilla trekking. The guest suites sit apart from one another, giving each unit a clear sense of space and privacy, while interiors draw on Rwandan craft traditions through woven textures, ceramics, and timber finishes. Broad windows keep the volcanoes in view, and the overall design feels calm without becoming formal. After an early start in the park, guests return to a place that is warm, quiet, and easy to settle into. That balance matters, actually, in this climate.

Inside the Lodge

Location

The lodge is located in Kinigi, near the headquarters of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda’s Musanze District. This position places guests close to gorilla trekking registration and briefing procedures, with road access from Kigali taking about two and a half hours.

Rooms

Singita Kwitonda Lodge offers eight one bedroom suites, and the adjacent Kataza House provides four bedrooms for exclusive use stays. The suites include a bedroom, lounge, heated plunge pool, fireplace, and en suite bathroom, with large windows facing the Virunga foothills.

Amenities

Amenities include a central lounge, dining room, bar, and outdoor firepit oriented toward the volcanoes. The lodge also offers a wellness area, treatment rooms, a fitness space, laundry service, and assistance with gorilla trekking logistics, from permit checks to departure timings.

Unique Experience

A stay here centres on quick access to Volcanoes National Park gorilla trekking, with guests reaching the briefing point after a short road transfer. The lodge’s highland position also gives clear views of the Virunga chain, especially in early morning before cloud cover builds.

Nearby Experiences

Gorilla Trekking

Multiple habituated groups occupy different sectors of the park, with permits issued daily for each family. Rangers locate the gorillas before trekkers depart, and the hike takes you through bamboo and montane forest to reach them. One hour with a gorilla family allows observation of feeding, infant care, and silverback behaviour at close proximity.

Golden Monkey Tracking

Habituated troops occupy the bamboo zone, moving fast through dense vegetation where visibility drops and positions shift quickly. Following them means pushing through stands where the monkeys feed on young shoots and leap between stems. The experience runs shorter than gorilla trekking but brings you closer to a species restricted to the Virunga-Bwindi region

Bisoke Crater Hike

The trail to Bisoke’s summit climbs through vegetation zones that change with altitude, ending at a crater lake enclosed by the rim. Steep sections pass through mud and dense growth, demanding full-day commitment and reasonable fitness. From the top, the crater opens below while neighboring peaks line the horizon in clear conditions.

Karisoke Research Station

A half-day trek brings you to the site where Dian Fossey lived and worked until her death. The station sits in a saddle between Bisoke and Karisimbi, accessible through gorilla habitat. Fossey’s grave lies beside those of gorillas she studied, maintained as part of the conservation history of this park.

Dian Fossey Grave Hike

The trek to Fossey’s burial site passes through forest where gorilla groups range, combining historical interest with wildlife possibility. Guides explain her research methods and the threats that gorillas faced during her years at Karisoke. The grave sits within a small cemetery where several gorillas, including the silverback Digit, are also buried.
