NYUNGWE NATIONAL PARK

Nyungwe Hill Top View Lodge

From a ridge above the Gisakura area, this lodge looks across tea covered slopes toward Nyungwe National Park's forest canopy. The highland position brings cool air and frequent morning mist, while the surrounding agricultural land marks the transition zone between cultivated hillsides and protected montane rainforest.

The lodge operates as a mid range option for visitors heading into Nyungwe, with rooms arranged across the hillside and a main building handling meals and guest services. Construction uses local stone and timber, keeping interiors warm against the cooler highland temperatures common at this altitude. Private balconies face the valley below, and common areas stay informal rather than polished. Most guests treat the place as a functional base, leaving early for forest activities and returning in the afternoon. It does what it needs to do, and the location close to the park entrance keeps logistics simple.

Inside the Lodge

Location

Near the Gisakura entrance to Nyungwe National Park, the lodge sits along the main road connecting Huye and Rusizi. This position keeps travel time to the park headquarters and trailheads short, while the drive from Kigali typically takes between four and five hours.

Rooms

Accommodation includes a selection of standard and deluxe rooms with double or twin beds, en suite bathrooms, and private balconies facing the valley. Rooms feature tiled floors, wooden furniture, and hot water showers, with mosquito nets and basic heating available in cooler months.

Amenities

A restaurant serves Rwandan and international dishes, with a bar and outdoor terrace overlooking the hills. Guests have access to WiFi in the main building, laundry service, secure parking, and staff assistance with park permits, guides, and transport arrangements.

Unique Experience

The elevated site gives clear views across the tea belt toward Nyungwe’s forest edge, with sunrises often visible before the clouds build. Guests can walk through nearby tea fields in the late afternoon, observing the picking process and speaking with local workers along the paths.

Nearby Experiences

Chimpanzee Tracking

Habituated communities occupy territories within the forest, located each morning by trackers before you set out. An hour with a group allows you to observe feeding behaviour, social dynamics, and vocalizations carrying across the valley.

Canopy Walkway

A suspension bridge hangs above the forest valley, positioning you at the level of the middle and upper canopy. The forest opens beneath while birds and monkeys move through branches at eye level. The structure spans a section where the valley drops away and treetops form an unbroken surface below.

Colobus Monkey Tracking

Troops of Angola colobus gather in numbers rare elsewhere, their black and white coats visible against green canopy. Following them leads you through forest sections where multiple primate species share the same trees. The monkeys tolerate close approach, allowing you extended observation without the time restrictions applied to chimpanzee visits.

Birdwatching

The forest holds Albertine Rift endemics found in few other locations, including Ruwenzori turacos and red-collared babbler. Guided walks bring you through zones where mixed flocks move through understory and canopy simultaneously. Specialist guides identify calls that reveal species hidden in dense vegetation around you.

Waterfall Hikes

Trail networks lead to waterfalls scattered throughout the forest, some requiring full-day hikes through the interior. Routes bring you through sections where the canopy closes overhead and streams cut through the slope.
