AKAGERA NAIONAL PARK

Karenge Bush Camp

Positioned on higher ground above Lake Ihema in Akagera’s central sector, the camp looks across open grassland, scattered acacia, and papyrus edged water channels. Elephants, buffalo, and several antelope species move through the surrounding habitat, while the elevated site provides broad visibility and cooler afternoon air.

The camp follows a classic mobile tented format, keeping things simple without losing comfort. Canvas units sit on raised platforms along the ridge, each facing the open savannah below. Interiors are functional and understated, with comfortable bedding, solar powered lighting, and bucket showers that work well in the bush setting. A shared mess tent serves meals and doubles as a gathering point before and after game drives. The atmosphere leans toward traditional safari rather than high end lodge, which suits guests looking for something closer to the original camping experience in Akagera.

Inside the Lodge

Location

The camp sits in Akagera National Park’s central zone, on higher ground above Lake Ihema and the surrounding wetlands. Road access from Kigali to the southern park gate takes roughly two hours, followed by an internal transfer to the camp through prime game viewing country.

Rooms

Accommodation consists of six canvas tents on raised wooden platforms, each containing twin or double beds, bedside tables, and solar lighting. En suite bathrooms include a flush toilet and bucket shower, while front flaps open onto a small veranda with seating and views across the plains.

Amenities

A central mess tent provides space for meals, drinks, and briefings throughout the day. Staff coordinate morning and afternoon game drives, guided bush walks, and night drives within Akagera. Laundry service is available, and solar power supplies lighting and charging points in the main area.

Unique Experience

Night drives operate from the camp, giving guests the chance to spot nocturnal species such as leopard, hyena, and African civet after dark. The hillside position also allows guests to observe animal movement across the plains below directly from camp, even between scheduled activities.
