AKAGERA NAIONAL PARK

Mantis Akagera Game Lodge

Overlooking Lake Ihema from a hilltop in Akagera's southern sector, this lodge offers wide views across the lake, surrounding wetlands, and savannah plains. The location sits near the park's southern gate, with easy access to both boat excursions and game drive circuits that cover the lower and central wildlife zones.

Originally built in the 1970s and later renovated, the lodge retains a classic safari hotel format with solid architecture rather than tented or temporary construction. Guest rooms are housed in the main building and adjacent wings, while shared spaces follow a conventional layout with reception, dining, and bar areas arranged around the central viewpoint. Interiors have been modernised but remain straightforward, combining tile floors, wooden furniture, and large windows that face the lake. The setup suits visitors looking for a fixed base with hotel style services rather than a mobile or bush camp experience.

Inside the Lodge

Location

Near the southern entrance of Akagera National Park, the lodge sits on an elevated site above Lake Ihema with road access from Kigali taking approximately two hours. This position allows guests to begin game drives or boat activities quickly after arrival without long internal transfers.

Rooms

Accommodation includes 42 rooms across standard, deluxe, and suite categories, all located within the main lodge building or connecting wings. Each room features air conditioning, en suite bathroom, and either lake or garden views, while suites add additional living space and private balconies.

Amenities

Shared facilities include a restaurant, bar, outdoor terrace, and swimming pool overlooking the lake. The lodge also provides a conference room, WiFi in common areas, laundry service, and a reception desk that coordinates game drives, boat trips, and guided fishing excursions on request.

Unique Experience

The hilltop position gives guests elevated views of Lake Ihema and surrounding plains from the pool deck and restaurant terrace. Boat trips depart from a jetty below the lodge, offering close observation of hippos, crocodiles, and fish eagles without leaving the immediate area.

Nearby Experiences

Game Drives

Open grassland and wooded hillsides allow visibility across wide distances, with predator sightings increasingly reliable since lion reintroduction. Large buffalo herds attract hunting activity and elephants browse along lake margins. The northern sector concentrates larger mammals, while southern routes pass through quieter woodland with antelope and birdlife.

Boat Safaris

Lake Ihema extends along the park’s eastern boundary, its waters holding hippo pods and large Nile crocodiles. A boat moves you through channels where papyrus gives way to open water and waterbirds gather along the shoreline. Fish eagles call from overhanging branches while monitor lizards rest on exposed banks.

Rhino Tracking

Black rhinos occupy a protected zone within the park, monitored by dedicated tracking teams. Guided walks bring you into this sector on foot, following signs until a sighting is confirmed. The experience operates under strict protocols to minimize disturbance while allowing close observation of a species once eliminated from Rwanda entirely.

Birdwatching

The wetland system attracts papyrus endemics including the papyrus gonolek and shoebill, though the latter remains uncommon. Savanna zones hold open-country species absent from Rwanda’s forested parks. A combination of boat safari and game drive covers both water-dependent and grassland specialists within a single day.

Behind-the-Scenes Conservation

The park’s recovery from near-total wildlife loss offers insight into active rewilding efforts. Visits to the rhino tracking headquarters show you how monitoring technology and ranger patrols operate daily.
